4 Kent WayNewark, DE 19716<div class="ExternalClassA158C3A78419490CA281F9E05D7B56C1"><p><strong>Murray Johnston</strong>, professor of chemistry, is interim associate dean for the natural sciences and mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences.</p><p>He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Bucknell University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University, he spent eight years on the faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he was also a Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences. He moved to the University of Delaware almost thirty years ago, where he holds joint appointments in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and in the School of Marine Science and Policy in the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment.</p><p>Johnston recently completed a five-year term as chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, where he previously served as director of graduate studies and also as director of a Multisite Research Program for graduate students across a consortium of universities and industrial partners. He has taught courses across the spectrum, from introductory chemistry for non-science students to specialized graduate courses. He has served on several college and University-wide committees and has received the Outstanding Scholar Award from the College of Arts and Sciences.  </p><p>Johnston’s research involves the development and application of mass spectrometry for field measurements and laboratory studies of airborne particulate matter. He has coauthored approximately 200 publications and has received continuous funding for research over the duration of his academic career. He received the Delaware Section Award for research from the American Chemical Society and the Benjamin Y.H. Liu Award for advances in aerosol instrumentation from the American Association for Aerosol Research. He has served in several capacities for the American Association for Aerosol Research, including on the board of directors and as treasurer, conference chair and president.
