Joann Browning holds bachelor's and master's degrees of fine arts in dance from Southern Methodist University. She currently serves as Senior Associate Dean for the Arts. Joann previously held administrative appointments in the College of Arts and Sciences including Interim Deputy Dean, Senior Associate Dean for the Arts, Associate Dean for the Arts and Faculty Fellow for the Arts.

In addition to her leadership role in the Dean’s Office, Joann serves as resident choreographer to UD Theatre’s Resident Ensemble Players, and was formerly Head of Movement Training for UD’s Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP). Her work focuses on how the human body works expressively in behavior. Joann is well versed in dance and movement in culture and society, period dance, Laban Movement Analysis and musical theatre styles. She has created and coached movement, choreographed and provided musical staging, and presented workshops for a wide range of professional theatres and dance companies, and universities, including Houston's Alley Theatre, the Delaware Theatre Company, The Enchantment Theatre of Philadelphia, the Voice Foundation and Milwaukee Dance Theatre. Joann consults internationally to corporations and individuals on physical expression in presentations and for personal development.

Recognized with numerous honors throughout her successful career, Joann is a recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the Association for Theatre Movement Educators (ATME), part of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education; the Lifetime Service Award in the College of Arts and Sciences; and the inaugural Delaware Arts Alliance Arts Education Advocate of the Year Award in 2016. She also received a Governor’s appointment to the Delaware State Arts Council.
