Biography

Kathryn Meier is Chief of Staff for the College of Arts and Sciences, where she provides leadership and strategic direction to the design, implementation, planning and assessment of initiatives to advance the educational, research and community engagement efforts of the college. She also serves as senior advisor to the dean on all matters relating to operational excellence, and ensures the management of resources within the college in coordination with the financial analytics, communications and information technology enterprises.

With 14 years in higher education administration combined with periods in the pharmaceutical and nonprofit industries, Meier is dedicated to building talented, highly effective teams and creating a collaborative environment to support faculty, staff and student success. In her previous roles as director of communications and manager of marketing and communications in CAS and UD’s Lerner College of Business and Economics, respectively, she established inaugural teams and guided strategic planning efforts to bridge gaps in internal communications, build collaborations among faculty, staff, administration and students, and engage alumni and friends. Her other roles at UD include administrative appointments in the Department of English and the Sea Grant College Program.

Meier has an extensive professional publication record of over 350 news releases, executive speeches and comprehensive reports, with select items picked up in national and international media outlets. She also conducts research on the science of storytelling in business through qualitatively examining how individual voices internal and external to an organization interact to form narratives. Her work analyzes how organizations, as collectives of individuals, tell authentic and compelling stories grounded in historical contexts to create and maintain an identity, brand and reputation. Based on significance to scholarship of business communication and demonstrated originality of thought and careful investigation, she earned the 2017 Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Association for Business Communication.

Meier is a passionate advocate for inclusive excellence and with travel to 34 countries and counting, she has a deep appreciation for working collaboratively with individuals of diverse backgrounds. She currently serves as a second-term executive board member on UD’s Women’s Caucus and chair of the communications committee, and as an ally of the LGBTQ Faculty/Staff Caucus. She is also dedicated to student success, and holds an appointment as adjunct assistant professor in the departments of English and Business Administration. In 2013, she received the YoUDee Outstanding Advisor Award for advising UD’s premier student a cappella group, Vocal Point, a role she held for nine years.

Meier earned her bachelor’s degree cum laude in English/business and technical writing; her master of business administration degree with specializations in management and organizational effectiveness; and her Ph.D. in English, all from the University of Delaware. She is an alumna of the HERS Leadership institute, an intensive leadership and management development program for women in higher education administration.
