Alumnus stands out for sound editing, characters' voices in 'Force Awakens'

 

David Acord at LucasFilm's Skywalker Sound studio, where he has worked since 2001 on sound editing for numerous projects, including several of the "Star Wars" films.

David Acord, a 1994 College of Arts and Sciences alumnus, has been making a splash in the new blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens, not only for his Oscar-nominated sound editing of the film but also as the voice of the stormtrooper who fights the traitor Finn.

The (Wilmington) News Journal on Sunday, Jan. 21, in an article written by reporter Ryan Cormier, CAS 00.

In talking about the University, Acord singled out Thomas Leitch, professor of English who specializes in film studies, for his helpful discussions and advice about the industry.

The story traces Acords career in the movie business, which began after graduation with an internship in the art department of a Philadelphia film company and led to his current job at LucasFilms Skywalker Sound.

Over the past 15 years there, he has done sound editing for other Star Wars films, working at LucasFilms Skywalker Ranch, which he describes to Cormier as an idyllic workplace.

In The Force Awakens, Acord provides the voice of two characters, including the fighting stormtrooper who has been singled out as a star by many fans on social media. He and colleague Matthew Wood have been nominated for an Academy Award for their sound editing, one of five nominations the film received.
