Six students and two faculty members from ??rebro University School of Music in Sweden are currently at the University of Delaware, living with seven UD students, learning about music education in the U.S., and taking part in American college life as part of an international partnership.
This international partnership, which began three years ago, is designed to give students a global perspective on music, art, education and culture.
"The partnership started within an international cohort of researchers in music teacher education," says Suzanne Burton, associate professor in UD's Department of Music. "My Swedish colleagues and I created the collaborative immersion course that includes music, art, education and culture because we wanted students from both universities to learn all facets of the others' culture. The course is designed to give students experiences that will enrich not only their college education, but also their perspectives on music education for when they begin their careers as music teachers."
While here in Newark, the Swedish students participated in an American dance class taught by UD Prof. Lynnette Overby, performed an informal concert for fellow students and faculty, and visited cultural landmarks such as the Smithsonian Institute as well as New York City art and music attractions. They also visited several area schools to experience music education in action.
In March, the UD host students will travel to ??rebro to have a similar experience in Sweden.
