Beginning in fall 2020 University
of Delaware students will be able to major in Global Studies.
While a minor has been offered since 2015, the major is a new opportunity.
The Global Studies major is
designed to enable students to succeed in an increasingly globalized world by
exposing them to the political and cultural foundations of global issues. Due to its interdisciplinary
nature, this major lends itself to double majoring or minoring in related
disciplines.
Those majoring in Global Studies
will choose among four concentrationsenvironment, health, migration and world
cultures.
Students in the program will be
prepared for graduate programs and for a broad range of career paths including government and
international business or in international health, humanitarian, environmental,
development, and other types of non-governmental agencies.
The Global Studies major offers a
rigorous and integrated program, with coursework related to the study of global
cultures and world issues in disciplines such as Anthropology, English, History,
Political Science, Women and Gender Studies, Geography, and world languages. It
asks students to look critically at transnational trends, patterns and
challenges and gives them the opportunity to do coursework on numerous regions
of the world.
Global studies programs emerged in
the 1990s as a reaction to debates about global connectedness and the cultural
effects of globalization and global forces. The interdisciplinary field looks
at transnational entanglements and connections of phenomena that appear across
national boundaries and cultural regions.
The major will be housed in the
Center for Global and Area Studies and overseen by a committee of faculty
members representing seven different disciplines.
