Professor Anna Klintsova has been honored by the Delaware Center for Neuroscience Research as the state's 2018 Neuroscientist of the Year.
Several UD undergraduate and graduate students were also recognized with awards for their research presentations at the center's annual symposium on Nov. 30.
Klintsova, professor of psychological and brain sciences, is also director of the department's graduate program in behavioral neuroscience.
Her research interest focuses on brain plasticity and on the disruption of that neuroplasticity by neonatal exposure to alcohol.
She has studied the use of targeted therapeutic interventions to increase brain plasticity and improve behavior in cases of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Klintsova has published extensively on her research, which has been supported by the National Institutes of Health.
UD students honored at the symposium for their research poster presentations were:
- Postdoc or research assistant categoryClarissa Nowak, second place.
- Graduate student categoryMegan Warren, first place (tied with Shardae Showell of Delaware State University); Michael Clupper, second place; and Alexandra Turano, third place (tied with Rachel Carpenter and Sara Downey of Temple University).
- Undergraduate categoryMikaela Eck, first place; and Natalie Ginn and Lauren Meckler, tied for second place.
Speakers at the symposium were Julie K. Andersen, professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging; Adrian Raine, Richard Perry University Professor in criminology, psychiatry and psychology at the University of Pennsylvania; and Thomas Gould, Jean Phillips Shibley Professor and Chair in biobehavioral health at Penn State University.
The Delaware Center for Neuroscience Research was established to create infrastructure to support the research and career development of neuroscientists in the state, especially at UD and Delaware State University. It is funded by the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) program of the National Institutes of Health.
